Social Media A to Z Series: A is for Audience

Global Audience- you social media audience is targeted however it is also global

So who is your audience?

The audience is the people you are, or will be, sharing things with. Now depending on who you are and what you are trying to do, your audience will differ.

Who are these people?

  • On a personal level, your audience may be your friends, neighbors, people who share similar interests.
  • On a professional level, your audience will most likely be your customers, potential clients, general contacts or colleagues.

So how do you talk to them?

  • Before you start talking, I would advise that you listen first, especially if you want to build your audience.
  • Whether you own the site or you are a visitor on the site, it is important to get a sense of the audience. Ask yourself questions like:
  1. What are the general topics being discussed? 
  2. What is top of mind with the audience? 
  3. What are their interests?
  4. What is the motivation?
  5. What are the hot items?
  6.  What are the issues? 
  7. What is the general tone of the questions/responses being shared?   
  • Seek out and interact with key members in the field. When you take the time to listen, these key social leaders surface.
  • This will give you a sense of the audience, their interests and how to interact to get the best response.
  • This isn’t any different to going to a gathering at a friend or neighbor. Before jumping into a conversation, you would listen and get a sense of the group and then you would join in!

So again, why is this important ?

  • Whether online or offline, understanding your audience will help you tailor your message for the best interaction. It will make it easier to know what will resonate with your members which will  contribute to a vibrant  and engaged community. Unlike Missy below:

As your audience and contacts grow, it is a good practice to put  your contacts into groups or lists. This will make it easier to manage your conversations later.
